John Sr. Lutz was born on August 12, 1862, in Eckartsweier, Ortenaukreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, the son of Mary and Michael.

He married Eliza Augusta Margaritte "Lizzie" Bickel on June 17, 1885. They had ten children in 20 years. He died in 1930 in Amherst, Wisconsin, at the age of 68.
